Moments that shaped the 2018/2019 NBA season: The Bounce

This NBA season was one for the ages.

An MVP race that was as good as any we’ve seen in recent history, 50-point games seemingly scored by everyone in the league, Westbrook’s 20-20-20 game, Jeremy Lamb’s unbelievable half-court game winner, and Luka doing Luka things for the entire season.

The best part of every season, however, is the playoffs.

The intensity, the passion, the amazing performances and the incredible moments that define the league for years to come.

This year, my favourite moment for the season was Kawhi’s game 7 game winning miracle against the 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semi Finals.

When viewing the play live, the agony and anxiety caused by the play was almost unbearable. Catching the ball near the top of the 3-point arc, Kawhi proceeds to dribble all the way around the 3-point line, whilst Ben Simmons switches with Joel Embiid on the defensive end. As Kawhi reaches the corner and shoots the ball over Embiid, he fades into his own teammates who are all standing for the final shot.

The ball bounces… and bounces… and bounces… and finally goes through the hoop. The feeling of the play is summed up by the pure release of emotion from the ESPN commentators who seem to roar when the ball leaves the other side of the net. The Raptors and crowd alike absolutely lose their minds with jubilation as the Sixers have no choice but to walk off the court and hang their head in defeat.

Their season ends with the cruel bounce of the ball.

Going on to win the championship, this shot will go down in history as one of the greatest game winners that the world has seen, and the only buzzer-beating game winning shot in a game 7 in NBA history.

Kawhi owned the playoffs this season, and he also owns my favourite moment of the 2018-19 NBA season.
